These past few weeks have been filled with never ending to do lists and worrying about making Thanksgiving a wonderful day for your family and friends. Now that the day has past and you made many new wonderful memories, it is time to look forward to the holiday season and making sure that you are taking care of yourself.

Thank you to the many followers that have checked in and encouraged me to keep up my blog. My goal is to continue to provide information that will help your everyday lives and to add anything else that may come along.

Well today I wanted to share with you an article that I just came across and thought it would help so many out.
I am always looking for something that will magically give me healthy hair. So I hope this article helps because I know I will be taking some of the tips.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOISTURE FOR HAIR
LET ME KNOW HOW YOU KEEP YOUR HAIR HEALTHY.Charleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11511022992580676263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2450119574653911997.post-33021665817741057072011-09-29T17:07:00.000-07:002011-09-29T17:24:37.454-07:00IS YOUR PILLOWCASE CAUSING YOUR ACNE BREAK OUTS???

Did you know your pillow case may be to blame for your recent breakouts? Yes, this is true. For many, simply changing your pillow case more often can reduce or eliminate your break outs.

A simple way to determine if this happening to you is to look at your break out. Pay attention to what side of your face has more acne. Usually, it will be the same side that you sleep on.

WHY?

It is no myth that sleeping on a dirty pillowcase can cause acne, Using a dirty pillowcase can in fact cause acne because it can aggravate an acne condition and cause the skin to become inflamed and irritated. Your face naturally secretes oils during the night and these oils are sticky. If you are using a dirty pillowcase then you are allowing your face to collect extra bacteria and waste during the night which often results in further clogging of the pores and acne outbreaks. It may sound dramatic, extreme or just plain foolish, but the truth of the matter is that using a dirty pillowcase is kind of like taking a dirty cloth and just wiping it all across your face for hours at a time. People with really sensitive skin may also be more prone to the clogging of pores, as the littlest things can sometimes set acne off causing skin to become irritated or inflamed.

Bacteria from our eyes, nose, and mouth all cover our pillowcases at one point or another. As you lay there totally unaware trying to count some Z’s your face is clogging up with toxins. They seep into your skin and clog your pores, causing acne outbreaks and irritation to occur.

WHAT TO DO?

Change your pillow case. It is simple enough but the real question is, How often? It may be a little excessive for some to change it everyday. I have to say in reality it depends on several factors. Take into consideration your hair type, skin and how much you swear through the night. If you hair is oily and you sweat quite a bit through the night, changing your pillow case everyday might be necessary. For some you may be able to change it every few days. Purchasing several different pillow cases will ensure that you have no problems when it is time to change your case.

Also make sure that you are washing your pillow in hot water every other week.

Please let me know if this tips helps you or any other tips to prevent or reduce acne. Witch Hazel has been used use in various ways for several years. I discovered this product about 6 months ago. I was looking for an affordable toner that would help with my acne and this is what I found.

You can Purchase this almost anywhere. Drug Stores, Markets, etc. I purchased this at Sally's. The price can range from $3 - $5, depending on where you purchase this.

Medical Studies have shown that Witch Hazel contains an anti-inflammatory effects and can reduce erythema caused by sunburn, protects skin with anti-oxidant properties to fight anti-aging free radicals.

Witch Hazel is an excellent natural astringent, which reduces inflammation, sanitizing the skin and at the same time helps with hydration of the skin and stabilizes the barrier function of the skin.

It also calms irritated skin and reduces trans-dermal water loss.

Simply use a cotton ball to apply to the skin as a toner. For best results, use this once in the morning and before bed. I have to warn you that there is a odor when you first apply, but disappears in seconds.

For myself, I really like this product and when I am using it twice a day every day, i notice that i have little to no break out.

But have you ever thought about how what you put in your mouth shows up your face (beyond that whole pizza/acne myth). Here, dietitian Jae Berman dishes out how you can truly eat your way to better skin:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">1. Vegetables:<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> Think green and orange foods (spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, citrus). They contain the antioxidant vitamin C which facilitates cell turnover and aids in collagen production. Carrots also contain vitamin A which, combined with the C, helps increase the skin's natural sun protection—and they help prevent breakouts by getting rid of dead skin cells.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">2. Berries:<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"> The flavinols in cherries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries (and in dark chocolate!) act as an antioxidant and improve skin texture, leaving it soft and smooth.

3. Fish: Skip the facial and eat fish two to three times a week. Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids—an anti-inflammatory that fights puffiness, redness, and irritation. Even canned tuna has benefits: It battles wrinkles with Selenium, a mineral that preserves the elastin in the skin, which keeps it tight.

4. Nuts: They make quick, easy snacks and just a handful does a lot of good. Almonds help protect skin from UV light because they contain high levels of antioxidant vitamin E. Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids and act as an anti-inflammatory, just like fish.

5. Oils: One of Cleopatra's ancient beauty secrets—olive oil. It's high in antioxidants and keeps skin supple. And flaxseed oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, just like fish, and offers all the same benefits.

Having beautiful skin is important to everyone. There are so many products that claim to help you obtain a perfect complexion and of course some of them work. But to truly get skin that glows and always looks healthy, you have to start within. Your skin reflects you diet, so if you eat fast food everyday and do not understand why your skin looks dull and is breaking out, this is why.

First of all, you should be drinking a lot of water everyday to keep your body and skin hydrated. Adding certain food and vitamins can make a huge difference in your complexion.

I know that this easier said than done, but making this change in your life will help you feel better about your appearance and more importantly you will be healthier and happier. I myself have acne prone skin and have hyper-pigmentation on my face and body. I am beyond frustrated because nothing works and make up only goes so far. Although I want the acne to disappear, I am more concerned about the hyper-pigmentation because it looks terrible. So I have been reseaching and thought I would share some of the interesting facts that I found.

All of the information I have found on line and just wanted to put it together to share with you. None of this will work over night. I am going to try some of these and I will update my results at least once a month. I know it will take a while for my body to get use to it.

Vitamin C Vitamin C is involved in collagen production and protects cells from free radical damage. Scientific studies found that when lab animals ate vitamin C-fortified food, their skin was better able to fight off oxidative damage. That said, replenish your skin’s vitamin C stores by eating plenty of vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Good sources include peppers (red/green/yellow), oranges, strawberries, lemons, and broccoli.

Vitamin E Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes and guard against UV radiation damage. Some research suggests that vitamin E may work in combination with vitamin C to provide an extra boost of anti-aging skin protection. However, because recent studies have raised some questions about the safety of vitamin E supplements, these nutrients should come from your diet, not from potent pills. I recommend you stick with food sources like wheat germ, fortified cereals, nuts and seeds (and the small amount found in a multivitamin).

Beta Carotene Another antioxidant critical for skin health is beta carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the body. Beta carotene/vitamin A is involved in the growth and repair of body tissues, and may protect against sun damage. In extremely high doses, straight vitamin A from supplements can be toxic, so always avoid. However, ample beta carotene from foods like sweet potato, pumpkin, carrots, mangos and apricots is entirely safe and great for your skin.

Selenium Selenium helps safeguard the skin from sun damage and delays aging by protecting skin quality and elasticity. Dietary selenium has been shown to reduce sun damage, and even to prevent some skin cancers in animals. Be sure to get your selenium from food, though, and not from supplements. Food sources include: Brazil nuts, tuna (canned light in water), crab, wheat germ

Omega-3 Fats Healthy fats known as omega-3 fatty acids help maintain cell membranes so that they are effective barriers—allowing water and nutrients in, and keeping toxins out. Omega-3s also seem to be able to protect skin against sun damage. In a study of skin cancer, people who ate diets rich in fish oils and other omega 3 fats had a 29% lower risk of squamous cell cancer than those who got very little omega 3 fats from food. Good food sources include oily fish, sardines, flaxseeds, walnuts

Supplements To improve skin health, I strongly recommend getting your nutrients from food sources. If you would also like to consider supplements, I recommend:

Multivitamin Choose a brand that contains 100% DV for vitamins A (optimally 50-100% coming from beta carotene and/or mixed carotenoids), C, and E, and which provides for about 55 micrograms selenium.

Omega-3 Fish Oils If you find it difficult to get omega-3 fats from food sources, try fish oil supplements. Speak with you doctor about which brand and amount is right for you.

THIS POST IS REALLY LONG SO I WILL INCLUDE MORE INFORMATION IN NEXT POSTING.
Baking Soda Mask to Fight Acne

This is so easy to make and can work wonders if your skin likes it. (Remember, not every cause of acne is the same, so you need to try different remedies and masks until you find the ones that work for you.)
All you need are two ingredients. Baking Soda (NOT baking powder) and water.

Mix a little together in your hands after washing your face with a mild cleanser and apply gently to your skin. Once you've coated your face with the baking soda and water mix, let it sit while you do other things around the house, or relax and read a book.

Rinse the baking soda film off your face and feel how soft and clear it feels. If your skin enjoys this recipe, and your acne improves, then you may try it several times a week to help clear your acne.

I found this information on another blog a while ago but wanted to share the information. I have used this Mask several times and always helps with my ance. You must be careful not to do this more than twice a week (2 times a week is only if you have major acne) because you will dry your skin.

Baking Soda is my go to product because you can do so much with it. Check out some of my other posts for more information.
After reading several natural skin treatments, I have to admit that I was very surprise by the ingredients, but if my skin will benefit from it, I am willing to give it a try. Hope that you enjoy this weeks. DIY Facial.

Chamomile and Mint Facial

This herbal facial can help you get rid of acne and other skin problems. In a medium bowl mix 1 tsp dried chamomile flowers, 1 tsp chopped fresh mint along with 1 tbs honey and 1 egg.

This complex facial recipe won't empty your pocket, still can have a positive impact on the condition of your complexion. Apply the mixture on your face and neck if you wish. Let the mask dry for at least 10-15 minutes then rinse it off with tepid water.

Beautisol's representative recently sent me a sample of Summer Glow - Dark Self Tanning Lotion. This is a great product for everyone that wants that warm summer glow that you can get overnight. Although I am naturally tan, I do wear pants year round so I was very excited to use this product on my legs. Before I get into my personal review, this is the information that is provided by Beautisol.

What it is:

Summer Glow™ dark self-tanning lotion is the perfect product for anyone looking for a deep, dark tan fast!

My Review: I have to admit that I am impressed with this product. I was not sure what to expect, but wanted some color on my legs. I feared that the tan would look fake and would be obvious.

I made sure to use gloves to apply this product evenly over both of my legs and followed the directions. I did this a couple of hours before I went to bed, so I did not see the full result until the next day. My legs were nicely tanned and it looked so natural. Also, there really was a pleasant odor from this product.

I would recommend this item for anyone that wants a natural looking Glow.

I am so excited to see how many people are interested in the DIY facials not only because they are easy, but because they are a natural treatment. I will continue to post more treatments every Thursday, but since I was unable to post last week I thought I would post an extra DIY facial treatment this week. Enjoy!!!!

Watermelon is not only a delicious and healthy treat, but it can also pose as a great aid in skin care. Apply fresh watermelon juice on your clean complexion and allow it to work for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. Your skin will not only be cleansed, but it will also receive an illuminating effect that will make you look healthier.

I am always looking for some new Makeup tips. I am sure you have experienced the same thing I have, a hundred different articles claiming to have some great Makeup tips and each article has the same tips. Recently, I ran across an article that has some tips that are truly new.

All of these tips are from top Makeup Artist. I like tips from Makeup artist because not only do they have to make others look perfect, they also make sure they look perfect 24/7.

Ditch the oil slick To keep shine in check, Revlon Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman always keeps blotting papers on hand. But in a pinch, she has an unusual way to keep oil at bay. "Believe it or not," she says, "I sometimes put deodorant on my finger and dab under my eyes and t-zone to help create a matte look."

Try a colored eyeliner Changing your eyeliner can make eyes look bigger and brighter, says makeup artist Tina Turnbow, who has worked with stars such as Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. "Try swapping black for plum, olive green or indigo," she suggests. "Black can close up the eye and make it appear smaller, because darker colors make the eye recede. Some colors, even brown, can be softer."

Go for sheer foundation Adding aloe to foundation gives it excellent slip, says makeup artist Brett Freedman, who's helped women like Vanessa Hudgens and Leighton Meester get gorgeous. "Sheer out your favorite base by adding a half a pea size of aloe to your foundation before you apply," he explains. "Also, you can apply aloe to your face and while still dewy, spread on a little foundation. You're ready for summer!"

Style your brows, size up your eyes Doug Howell, NARS makeup artist, has an easy trick for making eyes stand out more. "Use a powder to define the entire brow, but give extra attention to the center arch area of the brow," he says. "Since this is the highest area of the brow, it tricks people's eyes into thinking your eyes look bigger." Use a brow brush to apply powder eye shadows that correspond with your hair color. He recommends NARS single eye shadows in these shades: Blondie for lighter hair, Bali for medium hair and Coconut Grove for dark hair.

Create a wet look — for your lashes "There’s nothing sexier than the way lashes group together when they’re wet, like after getting out of a pool," says MAC Senior Artist Victor Cembellin. "Here’s the secret to the look: Apply MAC Brow Set in Clear to the eyelashes first, and then top with a coat of black mascara." The result: grouped, wet-look, sexy lashes.

Leave your lipstick in place The same product can be used to keep lipstick in check, says MAC Senior Artist Louise Zizzo. "MAC Brow Set in Clear used around the rim of the mouth will help prevent lipstick from bleeding," she explains.

Create a camera-perfect manicure When working with stars like Joy Bryant and Sheryl Crow , Dior celebrity makeup artist Ricky Wilson pays attention to details like fingernails. "One thing that I always do for nails is mix a bit of Dior's Skinflash pen with Dior Creme Abricot to get rid of any nicks at the base of the nail bed," he confides. "It also adds a beautiful sheen that I like to call 'red-carpet-ready' hands."

Get Bambi lashes without mascara You don't need mascara to make your eyelashes stand out, says mark celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh, who has worked with actors including Emma Stone and Ashley Greene. Just add eyeliner, she says: "To get voluminous-looking lashes, apply dark brown or black waterproof eyeliner to the upper rim of your eye — not on top of the lashes, but in between and underneath them. This gives the illusion of thicker, fuller lashes without having a lined eye."

I hope that these tips are useful and would love to hear about any of these tips that you try.

THIS WEEK DIY THURSDAY WILL CONTINUE ON FACIAL MASKS.

I have been so excited to see so many people interested in these DIY beauty treatments. Last week someone asked to know more about the science behind why these treatments are so good for your skin. I am still doing research and will talk more about this subject next week so make sure to check out DIY Thursday next week.

I have to say that this last week I started using the egg white and egg yolk masks and am loving them. Recently I had a bad break out and after a couple of treatments, my face started the clear up and my skin does feel softer.

Here are some more facial masks to try out this weekend.

Vinegar
Using vinegar as a skin toner dates back to the time of Helen of Troy. And it's just as effective today. After you wash your face, mix 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with 2 cups water as a finishing rinse to cleanse and tighten your skin. You can also make your own facial treatment by mixing 1/4 cup cider vinegar with 1/4 cup water. Gently apply the solution to your face and let it dry.

Milk
Here's another way to give yourself a fancy spa facial at home. Make a mask by mixing 1/4 cup powdered milk with enough water to form a thick paste. Thoroughly coat your face with the mixture, let dry completely, then rinse with warm water. Your face will feel fresh and rejuvenated.

Mayonnaise
Why waste money on expensive creams when you can treat yourself to a soothing facial with whole-egg mayonnaise from your own refrigerator? Gently spread the mayonnaise over your face and leave it on for about 20 minutes. Then wipe it off and rinse with cool water. Your face will feel clean and smooth.

Lemon Create a facial that both exfoliates and moisturizes by mixing the juice from 1 lemon with ¼ cup olive oil or sweet almond oil.

Mustard
Pat your face with mild yellow mustard for a bracing facial that will soothe and stimulate your skin. Try it on a small test area first to make sure it will not be irritating.

Welcome to another DIY THURSDAYS. Every week I will introduce some DIY beauty treatments that will not only help you look beautiful but will not cut a hole in your wallet.

This week I thought I would make it even easier with 5 different face masks that only require one ingredient. It can not get any simpler, I hope that you give these a try and let me know how you enjoyed the treatments.

1. Honey -- A humectant, honey, attracts and retains moisture, so it's great for anyone who wants to combat dry skin. Use a cloth damp with warm water and pat skin to open pores. Smear honey onto skin and leave on for 15 to 30 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, then pat skin with a cloth dampened in cold water to close pores

2. Raw egg yolk -- Egg yolks are high in vitamin A, a common ingredient in acne-fighting products. Spread on face and neck and leave on skin for 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

3. Raw egg white -- You'll get a lifting effect as the protein in egg whites dries on your skin. Beat egg white until frothy and spread on face. Wait until it dries and rinse off with warm water.

4. Grapes -- They contain powerful antioxidants, called polyphenols, which help combat aging. Cut one grape in half and rub lightly all over face.

5. Banana -- Bananas are one of the most nourishing fruits available because they contain magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, iodine, folic acid, and vitamins A, B, and E, all of which benefit the skin. Mash one overripe banana and spread onto face. Rinse off after 15 to 30 minutes with warm water.

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THESE MASK. LET ME KNOW ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH DIY FACIAL MASKS.Charleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11511022992580676263noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2450119574653911997.post-52392008341389494152011-06-28T15:33:00.000-07:002011-06-28T15:33:04.856-07:00PROTECTING YOUR SKIN THIS SUMMER...

Summer is here and everyone is making plans to go to the beach (well at least here is southern california) or take a swim in the backyard pool. Summer is a great time of year (even though I am not a fan of the heat) and the last thing most people are thinking of is protecting your skin.

When I was younger I enjoyed the nice tan I would get in the warmer months of the year, but I am noticing the beating my skin is taking. The last 2 years I have noticed uneven skin tones all over and how dry my skin can be. This is due to the fact that I thought it was okay that I can be out in the sun all day without applying some sunblock. Although, we should all be applying sunblock everyday, year round, summer marks a time of the year that you should be carry sunblock in your purse or car.

Skin Cancer should be the number one reason you should protect your skin. Also, aging spots, uneven skin tone, sun burn, dyhydrated skin are naming a few of the things that can happen. For most of us, we are doing everything we can to continue looking young and beautiful (as we all are), so adding some sunblock to the list of your daily regeiments will make a huge difference.

Remember that even though you may not notice any change in your skin and may think that you have nothing to worry about, as you age you will see the damage you have created and may not be able to remedy everything. There are so many different types of sunblocks, so instead of a never ending list, I listed 3 below that can be used by everyone. Find a product that fits your needs and remember to look at the products you already use, because some come in a formula that includes SPF (its killing two birds with one stone).

1. Bare Minerals SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen ($28) - This is a great product and from what have read it has received good reviews. This is a powder that can be used over your regular makeup as a setting powder and will provide sun protection. It will not clog your pores and it great to use with oily skin. If you do not want to add another lotion to your face, this is a great product.

2. Ocean Potion Suncare Clear Zinc Oxide Face Potion, SPF 45 ($3.39) - Zinc Oxide is known worldwide for its sun protection qualities. Face Potion SPF 45 goes on clear and protects the skin against both UVA & UVB sun rays. It is ideal for all outdoor activities. It will not clog pores, can be used all over your body, Hypo-Allergenic, Fragrance-free, absorbs quickly, and water resistant. This is a classic that can be used by everyone and affordable.

3. Banana Boat - I have to included this brand of sunscreen because I have been using this for about a year now and have no complaints. Banana Boat has a wide range of products to provide a sunblock to fit everyone's needs. The spf ranges from 20 - 80, and come in sprays and creams. For better protection make sure you get spf 80.

No Matter what Sunscreen/Sunblock that you choose, make sure that you do not leave the house without applying it. Your skin will thank you.

When I first started having issues with my skin (i.e. acne and hyper-pigmentation), I bought every product that promised a quick fix. Of course, I found that most of the products do not make a real difference (just wish I realized that before spending all that money, oh well).

I did a little more research and found several treatments, facials, scrubs, etc that only required a few ingredients that I already had in the kitchen. This is when I fell in love with DIY (Do It Yourself). Not only is this method more affordable, but most of the time you are using natural products that have beneficial qualities.

I have seen much more focus on DIY beauty treatments and would like to share some one treatment each week. I have tried so many things, sometimes I love it and make it part of my routine and others times I only try it once.

All the ingredients are easy to obtain, so I hope that you try it and please let me know what you think.

Honey is the most important ingredient in this facial. Honey has been proven to be a natural humectant that hydrates the skin.

This facial only requires 3 ingredients, which will clean and hydrate your skin.

DIY FACIAL WITH HONEY
Makes 1 treatment (Use within 2-3 hours)

1 tablespoon honey (cleanses and moisturizes)
¼ cup of oatmeal (soothes skin; rich in Vitamin E)
3 tablespoon plain yogurt or Greek yogurt (softens and soothes)

1. Finely grind oatmeal using a blender or food processor; set aside.
2. Using a spatula, stir together honey and yogurt in a small bowl.
3. Add the finely ground oatmeal to the mixture and mix thoroughly. Consistency should be smooth.
4. Apply mixture to face and neck. Leave it on the skin for 10-15 minutes.
5. Rinse with warm water.

PLEASE COMMENT AND LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS. IF YOU TRY THIS FACIAL PLEASE COMMENT ON YOUR EXPERIENCE. Also, hanging a small dress or photo of a fit person on your wall to encourage you to lose weight, this is a visual affirmation, you are telling yourself everyday when you look at it that you are going to fit into that dress or look a certain way.
